We’ve
known for almost a hundred years that aggressive iron storage disorders lik
e hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) are associated with increased morbidity a
nd mortality. Yet recent research suggests that even mild iron accumulation
(at ferritin levels still well within the laboratory reference range) can
cause significant metabolic problems, including insulin deficiency, insulin
resistance and hepatic dysfunction. In this presentation, I’ll review the
evidence connecting iron overload with chronic disease, and present a clini
cal framework for diagnosing and treating it.
