5 Steps to Stay Healthy During Times of Stress

by Beth Romanski, Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach

We all experience stress and anxiety on occasion (some of us more than others as our personality predisposition), but there are situations in our life that can raise our stress levels, such as a divorce, death of a loved one, challenges at work or a job loss, unexpected health diagnoses or simply doing too much and trying to be superwomen/men day in day out.

Often, we might turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms to deal with our emotions, such as drinking, smoking, avoiding exercise, overworking or overeating unhealthy comfort foods or sugary treats. While a Sugar Detox might necessarily not be possible during these times, we can still take our health into our own hands and a few simple steps to manage our mindset to get through times of uncertainty, overwhelming stress and anxiety.

Most of us take on too many things when declaring our New Year’s resolutions.

Knowledge Is a Gift

by Nicole Hodson, Executive Director, NANP

Once, a dear friend contacted me from the emergency room.

He’s kind of a tough guy, so he doesn’t like talking about his health issues (I’m sure you know someone like that too).

It’s YOUR Time to Speak Up!

It’s YOUR Time to Speak Up!

Miriam G. Zacharias, MS, NTC, BCHN, President of the NANP

Public speaking is the fastest way to grow your knowledge, your influence, and your base of followers. Yet many people dread the idea of speaking in front of an audience. Jerry Seinfeld, in fact, once quipped:

“According to most studies, people's number one fear is public speaking. Death is number two. This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the eulogy.”

How commitment (and a little rage) can change your fortunes

Not long ago, the following statement was posted on a website called Science-Based Medicine:

Ready to Share Your Passion?

A Note from Our Executive Director Nicole Hodson

As someone who loves to cook
, I was thrilled when my friend and colleague, Dr. Tammera Karr asked me to contribute a few recipes to her new cookbook. I’ve dreamed of writing my own someday, with a focus on the nourishing, full flavored, and colorful Persian foods of my childhood. So of course, when Tam asked, I was more than happy to play… and even a bit flattered!

TALK ABOUT A DO-ER!

In awe, I watched each day as the emails came rushing in about new contributors, recipes, and narratives from Tam’s extensive NANP network. In just a few short weeks her cookery book, a companion to the original work, Our Journey with Food, went from a mere concept to a full-blown reality. The pace at which this project came to fruition was somewhat astonishing and struck me as a fantastic example of how our community comes together.

Why I'm Optimistic About Our Future

A cursory browse through online newsfeeds and social media posts on the dire state of our nation’s health can be disheartening. But I’ve learned over the years that the “news” doesn’t give you the whole picture of the efforts being made to turn things around, each day, in small ways all over the country.

What is Holistic Nutrition?

“What is Holistic Nutrition?” I get asked this question a lot when I tell people what I do for a living. I tell them the basics; that holistic nutrition is about using food as medicine while integrating the body, mind and spirit.
